Yuma NRCD

Conserving 1,261,245 acres of Arizona

Yuma NRCD was formed on Sept. 10, 1952. The Districts' original long-range plan was largely focused on bringing the sandy soils on the Yuma mesa into agricultural production. Wind erosion was a serious problem in the 1950s. Drifting sand made irrigation systems difficult to maintain and roads impassable.

Yuma is the lettuce capital of the US, producing 90% of the crop. Also grown in Yuma are citrus and dates. You’ll see rows of lettuce and orchards of oranges or date palms as you drive through the District.

Along with the Laguna NRCD, the Yuma NRCD sponsors the Yuma Conservation Garden and Education Center. The Yuma Conservation Garden is a popular spot for local community members and school trips.
