Coconino NRCD
Conserving 5,315,267 acres of Arizona
The Coconino NRCD was created in December 1965 and includes roughly half of Coconino County. Its boundaries extend from the Colorado River to include Havasu Canyon, west to the Aubrey Cliffs, the entire expanse of the Coconino Plateau, east to the Little Colorado River to the Mogollon Rim within the largest contiguous stands of “Ponderosa Forest” in the world.
A partner of the Northern Arizona Grassland Initiative, managed by the AZ Game and Fish Department-Region II, the Coconino NRCD, along with local ranchers and landowners, is working to implement substantial restoration efforts and rangeland improvements. These efforts primarily focus on mitigating Pinyon-Juniper encroachment on rangeland and the overall health of grasslands.
The District also sponsors the Willow Bend Environmental Education Center. The Center’s mission is “to provide educational outreach services that build environmental awareness and an ethic of responsible stewardship of our natural and cultural resources.”
